Where to find gorillas in Uganda

In Uganda, one of the best places to find gorillas is in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in the southwestern part of Uganda and is home to about half of the world's mountain gorilla population. The park offers gorilla trekking experiences, where visitors can embark on guided hikes through the dense forest to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Another option is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, also situated in southwestern Uganda. While Bwindi is more famous for its gorilla population, Mgahinga is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area and also offers gorilla trekking opportunities. The park is smaller and less visited compared to Bwindi, providing a more intimate and exclusive experience with the gorillas.

Both Bwindi and Mgahinga require permits for gorilla trekking, which should be obtained in advance through Uganda Wildlife Authority or authorized tour operators. These permits are limited in number and can sell out quickly, especially during the peak tourist seasons, so it's advisable to book well in advance.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is not only an incredible wildlife experience but also contributes to the conservation efforts aimed at protecting these endangered primates and their habitats. It's an opportunity to witness these majestic creatures up close while supporting their preservation for future generations to enjoy.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is divided into four main sectors, each offering a unique gorilla trekking experience with different gorilla families:

Buhoma Sector: This is the most popular and accessible sector in Bwindi. It's located in the northern part of the park and offers several habituated gorilla families for trekking. Some of the well-known gorilla families in the Buhoma sector include the Mubare, Habinyanja, and Rushegura families. Each family has its own dynamics and history, making each trek a distinct experience.

Ruhija Sector: Situated in the eastern part of Bwindi, Ruhija is known for its beautiful scenery and diverse birdlife. It offers gorilla trekking experiences with several gorilla families, including the Oruzogo, Bitukura, and Kyaguliro families. The terrain in Ruhija can be challenging but rewarding, with the chance to encounter gorillas in a more secluded and pristine environment.

Rushaga Sector: Located in the southern part of Bwindi, Rushaga is known for its high gorilla population density and offers the opportunity to trek with several gorilla families. Some of the gorilla families in Rushaga include the Nshongi, Bweza, and Kahungye families. The sector is also known for its relatively easier trekking routes compared to other sectors.

Nkuringo Sector: This sector is situated in the southwestern part of Bwindi and is known for its steep terrain and stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes. Gorilla trekking in Nkuringo offers the chance to encounter gorilla families such as the Nkuringo and Christmas families. While trekking in Nkuringo can be challenging due to the rugged terrain, the experience is truly memorable.

Each sector in Bwindi offers a different gorilla trekking experience, with varying landscapes, gorilla families, and levels of difficulty. Whether you choose to trek in Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo, you're sure to have a unique and unforgettable encounter with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
